A recent study looked at what was more successful: quitting smoking cold turkey or gradually tapering down to less cigarettes. In the study, participants were divided into two groups. The first group was asked to gradually reduce the amount of cigarettes they smoked. The second group was asked to quit smoking and use nicotine patches.

The cold turkey group was more successful, with 50% of that group quitting smoking for good. The tapering, or “slow turkey” group only had 40% of the smokers quit successfully.

It would have been much more interesting, however, if this study had looked at the efficacy of quitting smoking using hypnosis. That research has been around for a much longer period of time. And yes, the studies prove it: hypnotherapy for smoking cessation shows strong results.

“Our results showed that hypnotherapy resulted in higher quit rates compared with NRT alone,” said Faysal Hasan, MD, FCCP, North Shore Medical Center, Salem, MA. “Hypnotherapy appears to be quite effective and a good modality to incorporate into a smoking cessation program after hospital discharge.”

Other studies have shown similar results. One study found that hypnosis was more effective than any other technique, and that a single session of hypnosis was three times more effective than the nicotine gum and five times more effective then willpower alone (willpower was 6%; nicotine gum was 10% and a single hypnosis session was 30%).
